RCorno del Renon & earth pyramids

Hiking highlights on the Renon plateau

On the Renon plateau, true natural wonders await: the Corno del Renon on the sunny plateau and the fascinating earth pyramids - towering formations of clay that rank among the most beautiful and tallest in Europe.

The Corno del Renon

On the Corno del Renon, you feel wonderfully close to the sun. At 2,259 metres, the summit delights visitors in both summer and winter with a unique view and an unforgettable 360° panorama of the South Tyrolean mountains. From the top, the view stretches from the Großglockner across the Dolomites to the peaks of the Ortler Alps, as no higher mountain nearby obstructs the horizon.

Hiking on the Corno del Renon

The summit is easily accessible via the Corno del Renon cable car. From there, continue on foot to the Cima Lago Nero and then about another hour uphill. In winter, you can also take the drag lift to the summit on skis or a snowboard.

Numerous hiking trails await you on the Corno del Renon - from gentle routes to more demanding tours. Along the way, traditional inns and mountain huts invite you to enjoy hearty South Tyrolean specialities.

The hike begins in Tann on the Renon plateau and first follows the idyllic themed trail “Hirtensteig” through shady forests and open alpine meadows towards the Saltner mountain hut. The well-maintained path offers beautiful views of the surrounding mountains and insights into the life of shepherds. From the Saltner Hut, follow the marked trails across gentle alpine pastures to the Unterhornhaus. From there, trail no. 1 leads up to the Corno del Renon (2,259 m), where a breathtaking 360° panorama of the Dolomites and the Alps awaits.

  • Starting point: Tann/Renon plateau
  • End point: Corno del Renon
  • Hiking time: approx. 2.5 to 3 hours for the ascent
  • Elevation gain: approx. 800 m
  • Trail type: varied; good footwear recommended

The famous earth pyramids

The earth pyramids on the Renon plateau in South Tyrol are among the region’s most remarkable natural wonders. Rising up to 15 metres high, these cone- and tower-shaped clay formations reach skywards above the sunny plateau. They are the landmark of the Renon plateau and one of South Tyrol’s most popular excursion destinations.

Formed from around 25,000-year-old moraine material left behind by Ice Age glaciers, these striking structures are constantly shaped by rain, wind and sun.

It is impossible to predict how long a pyramid will last. Once the protective stone at its tip falls away, it gradually begins to erode. That is why the earth pyramids are always worth a visit - as they are continually changing.

The hike begins in Collalbo and leads through the village to Longomoso. From there, follow trail no. 24 into the earth pyramids valley. The path is relatively flat and can easily be walked with normal footwear or even with a pushchair. At the destination, the earth pyramids can be admired from viewing platforms. The return route follows the same path back to Longomoso, then continues along trail no. 37 to the Von Eyrl promenade, which leads back to the starting point at Collalbo station.

  • Starting point: Collalbo station
  • End point: Collalbo station
  • Marking: 24
  • Hiking time: 45 minutes each way
  • Elevation gain: approx. 100 m ascent
  • Trail type: easy hiking trail, suitable for pushchairs
