Family-run and driven by passion - that is the Wanderhotel Regina in South Tyrol. Join us on a short journey through time and discover the story of our house on the Renon plateau. From modest beginnings with 20 beds to a refined retreat - it is a story of perseverance, dedication and strong family bonds. The queen of the mountains stands proudly and invites you to become part of its next chapter.
We celebrate an anniversary and look back on an impressive nine decades - years filled with hospitality, a deep connection to the mountains and a living tradition. Today, we are proud to welcome guests in the fourth generation. Your host Ralf Unterhofer and his family look forward to welcoming you!
Martha and her son Ralf carried the legacy forward, and soon new momentum followed: In spring 2018, they welcomed guests with a new extension, a refreshing outdoor infinity pool, a new restaurant area, a new lounge for relaxation, an enlarged garden and sun terrace, as well as a secure underground garage. The redesign transformed Regina into a modern retreat, combining tradition with progress. In 2020, the hotel experienced another loss: senior host Trude Unterhofer, the heart and soul of the house, passed away in July. For decades, she held the family together and touched countless guests with her warmth. Yet her spirit lives on within the walls of the hotel.
In 2006, the former guesthouse was expanded and developed into a 3-star superior hotel in Soprabolzano on the Renon plateau. Guests now enjoyed not only the breathtaking scenery, but also the warm hospitality of the family. Life, however, also brought moments of sorrow. In spring 2014, the beloved Klaus passed away far too early, casting a shadow over the hotel. The family mourned, yet found comfort in continuing his legacy. In loving memory, he remains forever in our hearts - and beyond every summit, he is always with us.
As one of the five founding hotels, the Wanderhotel Regina is among the pioneers of authentic hiking holidays in the Alps - a certified member offering guided tours, carefully prepared maps and hosts who share their passion for the mountains with their guests. In 1995, another renovation followed: rooms were expanded to create more space for the steadily growing number of visitors. The family worked hand in hand, and Trude, the senior host, shared her knowledge and wisdom with the younger generation.
In 1989, son Klaus took over the reins together with his wife Martha, following in his parents’ footsteps. Alongside his mother Trude, they managed the house. Klaus, a true visionary, drove the guesthouse forward with fresh ideas - under his leadership, it flourished.
Between 1972 and 1973, Trude and Luis took a bold step: the house was completely refurbished and extended. Each room was fitted with its own shower and WC - a luxury that amazed guests at the time. The walls now witnessed new adventures, and the guesthouse continued to grow.
Guesthouse Regina, our “queen”, weathered the storms of the Second World War. In 1968, daughter Trude and her husband Luis Unterhofer took over, after her parents had run the house for more than 30 years. With great care and dedication, they welcomed guests from near and far, turning the guesthouse into a home away from home: Trude, a strong woman with a warm heart, and Luis, the skilled chef.
It was in 1936 that Maria Zwerger and Raimund Brenn opened the guesthouse Regina in the picturesque mountains of South Tyrol. At the time, Italy was under fascist rule and German names were forbidden, so the guesthouse was named after the Latin word for “queen”. With 20 beds, running hot and cold water and central heating, it was a true modern gem - guests felt like royalty from the very beginning. Maria and Raimund poured their heart and soul into their dream, and before long, the halls of the guesthouse were filled with the cheerful laughter and stories of travelling hikers.
